How to Care for Fresh Flowers

At Milano Florist, we want your flowers to stay beautiful for as long as possible. Whether you’ve received a hand-tied bouquet or a professionally arranged vase, these flower care tips will help your blooms last longer and stay vibrant.

  • Use a clean vase: Wash thoroughly with warm water and mild soap before filling.
  • Add fresh water daily: Flowers drink more than you think—keep stems submerged at all times.
  • Trim stems: Cut about one inch off stems at a diagonal every two days for better water absorption.
  • Keep away from heat and drafts: Avoid direct sunlight, heating vents, and appliances.
  • Remove wilted blooms: This prevents bacterial growth and keeps the arrangement fresh.

Rose Care

Roses are timeless and elegant, but they need a little extra care. Remove any leaves below the water line to prevent bacteria. Keep water clean and refresh daily. Recut stems every 2–3 days. If a rose head droops, submerge the entire stem and bloom in warm water for 30 minutes to revive it.

Lily Care

Lilies are long-lasting blooms with large, fragrant petals. Remove the pollen from stamens to prevent staining. Change the water every other day and trim stems slightly at each change. Display lilies away from direct sunlight and fruit (which emits ethylene gas that shortens vase life).

Hydrangea Care

Hydrangeas are water-loving flowers. If they start to wilt, submerge the entire head in cool water for 30–45 minutes. Keep their stems in deep water and mist petals daily for best results.

Orchid Care

Orchids prefer bright, indirect light and consistent moisture. Water sparingly—usually once a week—and let excess water drain completely. Avoid cold drafts and direct air conditioning. For cut orchid stems, change water every 2–3 days and recut the stems for optimal hydration.

Seasonal Flower Care

Each season brings unique blooms—from spring tulips and daffodils to fall sunflowers and winter evergreens. For specific seasonal flower care advice, explore our seasonal collection or contact our expert florists for guidance.
